Television show April 2015

This is a 2-minute TV item that aired in April 2015 on Dutch national television. It's a bit shaky because I ended up making a video of the TV screen with my phone. I couldn't figure out another way to get this done :) See translation further below.

(I know I'm a bit late in posting this, but this blog is not about how many times I've been in the media, but about sharing information on the use of Curcumin and Genistein for CF. However, some people use the blog to show their doctors that CurcGen is being taken seriously in The Netherlands and for them this may be useful even though it's in Dutch)

Introduction: "Doctors are baffled. Jaap is 8 years old and has CF, but he hardly shows any symptoms. Mom Samantha is convinced it is because of her 'supersauce'. She has worked on it for years and doctors are very interested in the mechanism behind the 'medication' she developed by herself. "

Me: "Regular applesauce from the supermarket. This is the Curcumin, it's from Turmeric and it's used in Curry for example, it's what turns Curry orange."

See the interviewer with his head through the window :)

Voice over: "Samantha can't believe her ears when she hears her 'supersauce' is starting to get serious scientific attention."

Me: "Dancing and screaming through the yard! Followed by a feeling of disbelief...".

Voice over: "In 2009 her son Jaap is diagnosed with CF (it was 2008 btw), a life threatening disease with an average life expectancy of 30 years."

Me: "The moment you hear that diagnosis, it's like you heart is being ripped out of your chest".

Voice over: "Samantha refuses to just accept it and goes to work with compounds from soy milk and Curcumin, and with success! Jaap is now 8 years old and is doing much better than other CF patients his age. "

Dr. Hugo de Jonge: "He had no symptoms of lung disease, he had normal digestion and his growth curve was excellent."

Me: "I've searched the internet every day for an hour or two at least, to see if I could find anything to support J's health."

Voice over: "Lab studies from Erasmus University Medical Centre now show that the 'supersauce' indeed influences J's cell function."

Dr. Hugo de Jonge pointing at the graph on the screen: "This is Curcumin from Turmeric, this is Genistein from soy beans. That the combination would work synergistically like this, we were not aware of that".

Voice over: "The promising research is being expanded. With a 300,000 Euro grant, the 'supersauce' will soon be tested in other patients."

Interviewer asks Jaap: "does it bother you, eating 'supersauce' every day?

J: "No! Without the 'supersauce', I would get a tummy ache!".

Interviewer to Dr. de Jonge: "Supersauce.... sounds a little like Hocus Pocus nonsense".

Dr. de Jonge: "No, Genistein and Curcumin are chemically well defined components or molecules and are available in food supplements."

Voice over: "Unfortunately the 'supersauce', as far as is known now, only works for patients with the same mutations as Jaap."

Me: "if it could help other patients, that would be fantastic!"

***********************

Many found it hilarious (or annoying) that I was spoon feeding J his supersauce. It never even crossed my mind people would react to that...lol... But I'll explain anyway. The small container of supersauce has enough for 4 doses to be used throughout the day, so I need to make sure he gets just the right amount each time. The other reason is that the supersauce contains his enzymes as well. For the non-CF people: CF patients need to take enzymes whenever they eat fatty foods. These enzymes are like small beads (in Dutch: korrels) and come in capsules. J has never enjoyed swallowing capsules and in that case the way to give the enzymes is by opening the capsules and mixing the beads through something acidic, like applesauce. That's how we started stirring other supplements through that applesauce also. So, every time before he eats I pour the beads into a corner of the small supersauce container and mix them through just enough supersauce for that one meal. He doesn't like the beads/enzymes and if he does this himself, he starts gagging. So that's why I do it! :)
